Picturesque historic Whitstable... the inspiration for New England's style

Originally known as Whitenstaple in the 1086 Doomsday survey, Whitstable is peaceful, tranquil and has a gentle pace of life. The town has been a favourite haunt of Londoners since Roman times. The air is fresh and clean and the views from the beach are simply stunning - the wind farms on the shivering sands, and the enigmatic sand spit that appears at low tide, stretching out into the Swale. In mid summer, the sun sets over this sheltered estuary and people come from far and wide to revel in its beauty.

If you have never been there, take one of the regular train services from London and watch the Medway towns drift past (the journey’s just 60 minutes) - sit on the left if you want the sea views! The town lies 55 miles south east of London, just over an hour by car down the A2/M2 on the north Kent coast.

Whitstable is quirky, unspoilt, and traditional - not unlike Britain in the fifties - with its greengrocers, stripy-blue aproned butchers, fishermen queuing in the bank in their white Wellington boots, families enjoying the tea gardens and dogs gambolling together on Tankerton slopes. Over a thousand colourful beach huts line the seafront, looking extremely inviting. The town boasts three Yacht clubs, football and rugby clubs, swimming pool and bowling alley. The jewel in the crown being the wonderful Horsebridge Arts Centre, presenting live music, dance, poetry, art exhibitions and a Mosque on a Friday evening.

The high street has a diverse array of independent traders, art galleries and handy high street staples and, of course, the fish restaurants - most notably Wheeler’s Oyster Bar. And just try and resist the old-fashioned sweet shop selling rhubarb and custards by the quarter pound! Charming alleyways (with names such as Squeeze Gut!) lead to the seafront boardwalk and the famous Neptune pub. Also, check out the bi-monthly farmers market, a Thursday flea market and the weekend Harbour market - all designed to enrich the shopping experience. If you’re short on time, there are two supermarket chains on the south side of town, and for those who want the reassurance of the ‘Big Shop’, the cathedral city of Canterbury is 15 minutes away with Whitefriars Shopping Centre hosting Fenwick’s, Habitat, Gap, Marks, Waggamamma, Waterstones and many other proprietary outlets with ample parking.

There’s more! Recent news: Whitstable has become a Transition Town - the first in Kent. The townsfolk will be pushing hard to reduce the carbon footprint and dependency on fossil fuels. Also, Whitstables' own Duncan Down is now a protected area.

For those hankering for real life changes without compromising lifestyle, Whitstable offers it all with its realistic and competitive house prices, highly rated schools and growing employment prospects.
