Tremendous Six Bedroom Victorian Gem With 180ft Garden

It's all too rare to find a period house with such original details. This spectacular semi-detached six bedroom Victorian beauty retains so much splendour throughout; fireplaces, cornicing, floors, doors, ceiling roses, stairs - even the original pantry is still there. The rooms sizes are positively vast by today’s standards. There's a head height cellar and large loft to further increase the potential. The 180ft rear garden backs onto a magical nature trail owned by The Horniman Public Museum and Public Park Trust created on the site of disused train tracks. It's a leafy wonderland - we felt as though we'd had a day in the country. The current owners have lovingly restored much of the house's original integrity; any work remaining will really make it your own. Location wise you're within easy reach of so much. Lordship Lane and its perfect mix of boutiques, cafés, pubs and eateries is a short hop on any number of buses - or you can walk it in around 10 minutes. Forest Hill is close by for more amenities and you can grab the London Overground at Forest Hill station or Honor Oak station.

The property stands double fronted behind two leafy arches - one for pedestrians and one for off street parking. A majestic portico bearing the name Reigate Lodge is flanked on either side by proud square bay windows with original ornate stucco detail. This detail is also found at the top of the four pillars of the portico. The original door, still with its stained glass, opens wide to a spacious hall where you'll pause for more than a minute to appreciate the elegant staircase which curls upward. Original cornicing, dado rails and doors with ornate period panes further entice. The first reception sits on your left with another flood of Victorian adornments. There's a ceiling rose, cornicing and that front aspect bay with high sash windows. The feature fireplace is wide and wonderful. A second sitting room sits the far side of the hall with much the same list of attractions. Next is the formal dining room which stretches almost six metres culminating at a set of pretty French doors opening to the garden. Venturing outward you'll first see some dishy original tiling underfoot. A vast century-old Weeping Willow takes centre spot cascading mature greenery downward. It affords you shade and dappled light over the main section of lawn. Beyond this you find another lawn and further mature greenery.Read More

Back inside you'll find the kitchen/diner running from the end of the hall. It faces onto the garden through a huge sash window. There's an adjoining pantry and separate wc with further garden access. The cellar is accessed from behind the stairs and will host a fine wine collection and cherished whatnot. Heading upward you'll find it simply impossible not to handle the mahogany banister. The first landing is bright and spacious - certainly big enough for a seating arrangement. Two large double bedrooms face front each with fitted storage, stripped boards and original feature fireplaces. The third and fourth bedrooms, also with feature fireplaces and storage both enjoy a garden vista. The bathroom is toward the end of the landing. It has a school house style radiator, period wash hand basin, loo and roll top bath. Upward again you meet a further spacious bright landing. Two more double bedrooms each tuck into the eaves. One fronts the street, the other peers over the top of the wonderful Willow. Both have fireplaces and are carpeted.

Location? A few handy shops rest just on Wood Vale and include a newsagent and terrific butchers. Your nearest station is Honor Oak Park for the London Overground line and trains to London Bridge - a mere 10 minute walk. Buses are in their many on Forest Hill Road and there are some nice gastro type pubs on this road too (try the Forest Hill Tavern or the Herne perhaps). For further eating and retail opportunities, fabulous East Dulwich (and well-loved Lordship Lane) is but a 10 minute walk and Forest Hill is a 15 minute stroll (the Sainsbury's here is good for shopping and cupboard filling). Green space? Peckham Rye, One Tree Hill and Horniman Gardens are all seriously close for a walk or a kick-about. Read Less
